Job Hunting and Avatar Suckage

I e-mailed my application for a library job in Illinois early Tuesday afternoon. At nearly 4:00 this afternoon - over 24 hours later - the e-mail bounced back to me. Of course, I didn't actually check my e-mail until after I got home from work, so it was far too late for me to call and try to talk to someone at the library. G-mail says that they'll keep trying to send the e-mail for two more days. Applications must be submitted by end of the day Friday. I'm not really sure what to do from here. I guess I could pay a lot of money to express mail my application so that it gets there on time. Ugh. Or I could probably just try to call the director (who's supposed to be the contact person) and ask him what to do - after all, it seems to be his e-mail's fault that the message won't go through, not mine.

Ug. Too much work.

Good news is that if I ever track down a second part-time job, my boss claims that she'll be flexible with my schedule. To a point of course, but that's progress. I'm also pleased with myself for insisting that I got what I wanted in another area at work. Go me!

I got my name on our brand-new Avatar DVDs before they started circulating. Greg and I watched it tonight. No, we hadn't seen it in theatres. The movie kind of sucked. Very very pretty, but not much in the way of compelling story. It was a bunch of elements that we've seen before. Nothing new here. And I didn't really care one bit about the characters. If there's one thing I know about sci-fi it's that the best stuff explores the nature of "humanity," usually in extraordinary circumstances, which means that you HAVE to have compelling charactrs who grow and change as the story progresses and who remain equally or (ideally) more interesting than their setting. I suppose that by the movie's definition Jake does grow and change, but it wasn't moving at all. Instead we have a bunch of characters who are there to fill specific stock roles and never manage to touch my soul. And the thing is all the elements are there, they just fall very flat in the end. Very disappointing, although I can't say that I wasn't expecting it.

And apparently I'm a space cadet because as I was cleaning out my inbox I found and e-mail from Amber that I really should have responded to three weeks ago. Oops. Here's hoping that my reply isn't too late and that she doesn't think me a terrible person for ignoring her e-mail.

Must try to sleep so that I can be up bright and early for stupid job hunting in case I need to express mail my resume. Ugh.
